KARACHI – In a significant move, Karachi’s business community has unveiled plans to launch Air Karachi, a new airline aimed at boosting the city’s connectivity and economy. The announcement, led by prominent businessman Hanif Gohar at the Karachi Press Club, highlighted an initial investment of Rs 5 billion.
Details of the Initiative:
Registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP), Air Karachi awaits federal licensing to begin operations. The airline will initially operate with three leased aircraft and plans for future expansion. Air Vice Marshal Imran Majid Ali has been appointed as CEO.
Inspired by the success of Air Sial, the initiative includes shareholders such as Aqeel Karim Dhedhi, Arif Habib, and other notable business leaders. “Karachi, as the economic hub of Pakistan, deserves an airline of its own to meet its growing business and travel demands,” said Gohar.
Broader Vision and Economic Concerns:
S M Tanveer, Chairman of the United Business Group, emphasized that the airline will not only enhance connectivity but also create jobs and revitalize the aviation sector. Alongside this announcement, Tanveer criticized current government policies affecting Karachi’s business environment.
He introduced the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry’s (FPCCI) Charter of Economy project, which involves 20 experts devising strategies to boost exports, create employment, and enhance revenue. Tanveer also called for reforms such as a single-digit interest rate and the revival of SRO 1125 to support exports.
As the business community works to address broader economic challenges, including high electricity costs and a depreciating rupee, initiatives like Air Karachi symbolize a proactive approach to reviving Karachi’s economic dynamism.
